Matou Family

A yakuza family in TFR.

Description

Completely unrelated to the clan of magi since it came from the side of the family that lacked any magical potential, it was a yakuza family ruled by many members of the Matou family, and at several points, a subsidiary of the Sonozaki Family. The powerful family was a notable force in Japan and Coolsville, and was involved in several attempts to take over the Sonozaki Family, being forcefully disbanded in the end, but it's members never forgot the plight of their patriarchs, and when the next heir showed up, regrouped to strike at the Sonozaki once again.

History

The Matou family was first established as the army of Matou Zouken, who sought to use it to combat any non-magi means that stood against his claim for immortality, for example society itself. The family became a notorious and well-known criminal organization in Japan. Eventually, he managed to have the Matou Family also stationed firmly in Coolsville, seemingly lead by the "Matou Boss" while he actually lead things from the shadow. Due to a feud between the group and the Sonozaki Family, Sonozaki Oryou, the matriarch of the group and a figure of unparalleled cunning and ruthlessness even compared to him, orchestrated the demise of the Matou Family. Under her directive, the family's forces led by Steven Sonozaki and Shimano Futoshi attacked the Matou Family, and massacred them. Amidst the carnage, Zouken whispered vows of retribution, as Steven killed the Matou Boss due to a misunderstanding caused by the presence of a young Kiryu Kazuma. After the event, Zouken changed his name and identity, eventually becoming the Soprano Family's Chief of HQ.

Many years later, remaining members were gathered by Matou Kariya and made a subsidiary of the different family that connected it to the Sonozaki. Initially, it was his oath brother Kiryu Kazuma who was supposed to be promoted and granted his own family, but after Kiryu took the fall for the murder, Kariya was granted the honor instead. Eventually, the Matou Family branched away from it's parent family and became a direct subsidiary of the Sonozaki Family.

By the time Kiryu was out of prison, the Matou Family had become one of the three largest groups within the Sonozaki Family. On December of that year, the Matou Family kickstarted a civil war within the Sonozaki Family by disclosing an incident related to the gathering and disappearance of several magnitudes of money for keyboards, and then the subsequent flooding of those keyboards into the streets. Gathered under Kariya, they started an insurrection within the Sonozaki. The keyboards had actually been gathered by a member of the Sonozaki with the help of Sudou Tatsuzou, the Japanese Foreign Minister, and Sudou had appropriated them through trickery. Sudou had been using his control over the keyboards and the money to coerce Steven Sonozaki into using the Sonozaki to aid the advancement of his political career, so Steven had the money stolen to remove Sudou's leverage. After learning of this, Patriarch Kariya made a deal with Sudou to recover the money together and split it in half. Both the Matou Family and Sudou multiple attempts to capture Jill Stingray and her son in order to stop her from stopping their plan, but they were thwarted by Kariya's oath brother, Kiryu.

Ultimately, Sudou would betray Kariya by making another plot with a certain person, and attempt to kill both Kiryu and him to take the money together. But when Jill sacrificed her life to save Kiryu, Kariya would go on to repent for his crimes by sacrificing himself to kill Sudou by using magecraft atop the Millennium Tower. Following Sudou's death, the family was forcefully disbanded and the members dispersed to several other families.

TFR/Season 8

When Kariya's unknown child, Kieran, revealed himself to the world, he approached the Sumadera Family, becoming a contributor to it, and eventually met Hayashi Hiroshi. With him as both as his mentor and acting leader of the family, they gathered the disparate members of the Matou, and became another warring faction against the Sonozaki Family at the time when much discontent was had by different factions about the current direction and new heirs.

Matou Family members attacked one of the main family's safehouses, an Angel Mort joint, where Kiryu Kazuma and Kasai Tatsuyoshi met and defeated Kieran and Hayashi, managing to protect Akane, Mion, and Shion, and run away along with Leo.

In the Sonozaki Estate, Kieran and Hayashi block Kiryu's way, but they are both defeated and forced to flee.
