A Legend among legends of wrestlers, a Luchador who got his fame in the mystical land of Mexico.

The Barbarian[edit | edit source]

Born as Carlos Santiago Espada Moises in Cuba, he and his mother moved to Boston, where she met Richard Ashenoff. Upon adopting him and moving to South Florida, his name was listed as Charles Ashenoff. He had a rough life, learned how to box and steal cars, expelled from several schools, was arrested and charged as a juvenile with credit card and motorcycle theft, and eventually selling drugs. He had a choice of either jail or the military, choosing the latter. After discharge, in 1988, he was met with manager John Roberts, who offered him a career in wrestling in Tijuana. He was led to the dressing area and introduced to Manuel de los Santos, the promoter who also wrestled in the event as “Kiss”. De los Santos took one look at the 215-pound bodybuilder and did the classic double-take –– what the hell is this guy doing here, and, how quickly can I get this guy in the ring. Konnan explained how he was brought here by John Roberts. Suddenly, a big roar (laughter) went up from another wrestler, Rey Mysterio. Mysterio explained to Carlos that Roberts was just a nutty fan, always in the front row, but that he did nothing involved with managing or agent-ing. Still, the wrestlers asked Carlos, want to give it a try?

Billed as El Centurión, he debuted for the Universal Wrestling Association and later joined the CMLL, where on his debut, the ring announcer was not given a name and swiftly made up Conan El Barbaro, later changed to Konnan.
